Going out of town with the kids for the holidays? Think “Exhibit” while you’re away.

Planning to travel out of town for the holidays? If so, don’t pass up the opportunity to gather some useful evidence along the way. If you’re embroiled in a child custody fight, an out-of-town trip with the kids is a prime chance to collect “exhibits” that can be used in your case.
For example, if you’re visiting a family member’s home, be sure to take photographs. Document your travels; take pictures of the kids having fun at family celebrations. If the children are flying on a plane for the first time, keep the boarding passes and other keepsakes of the trip. If you visit a resort or entertainment complex, such as Disneyworld or SeaWorld, buy some souvenirs at the gift shops. Get the kids to create a scrapbook too.
Think in terms of “exhibits” — documents, pictures and mementos that can be admitted into evidence in a custody case to reconstruct how much fun your children had during their out-of-town holiday trip. Testimony is useful, but if you’re telling the court what you and your children did over the holidays, nothing enlivens your testimony more persuasively than some genuine “exhibits” from the trip.
As an added bonus, scrapbooks and souvenirs may help your kids remember fondly the good times they had over the holidays — and such memories may be helpful when the kids are interviewed by custody psychologists and judges.
